Elders Share the Arts Presents
The Bel Kaufman Flamekeeper Award
Remembering the Past to Inspire the Future
In 2007, Elders Share The Arts proudly instituted the Flamekeeper Award in the
name of its first recipient, novelist and humorist, Bel Kaufman, for carrying on the tradition
of storytelling begun by her grandfather, the writer and humorist, Sholom Aleichem. It is
presented to exceptional individuals who have demonstrated transformative leadership in the
sectors of arts & aging, and who inspire others to see our potential as we age.
